Welcome to the Monta Loma Recreation Area Renovation Project

The City of Mountain View is excited to announce the renovation of the Monta Loma recreation area and playground. Through a long-standing joint-use agreement with the Mountain View Whisman School District, this space serves as a vital recreational hub for both students and the surrounding neighborhood.

Our goal is to refresh and modernize the park facilities to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our active community for years to come.

Project Background

The Monta Loma recreational area is owned by the School District but is maintained and programmed by the City of Mountain View. This unique partnership allows us to maximize open space for public use.

With an estimated construction budget of $650,000, this project focuses on enhancing the existing recreation area and playground structures to create a more functional, safe, and inviting environment for all residents.

Public input is a critical step in this renovation. Following our initial outreach, we will move into the next phase of design based on the feedback received from the community.

The approximate area of the renovation is shown in the map below.

Project Update – June 2026

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Monta Loma Recreation Area Renovation Project community outreach process.

Following the April 30, 2026 Community Meeting, City staff received additional feedback from residents requesting that more sand play opportunities be incorporated into the project. Staff carefully reviewed this feedback and evaluated options that would maintain the project's accessibility, safety, maintenance, and budget objectives.

Based on this feedback, the preferred design concept (Concept B) was revised to replace a proposed small log play element with a second designated sand play area. This modification allows the project to provide additional sand play opportunities while maintaining the overall project scope and budget.

On June 11, 2026, City staff presented the updated preferred concept to the Mountain View Whisman School District Board of Trustees. The Board concurred with the updated Concept B, including the addition of the second sand play area, and supported the City moving forward with the next phase of the project.

With School Board concurrence received, the City will now advance the project into the design phase. During this next phase, staff and the design team will prepare detailed construction documents and submit the project to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) for review and approval prior to construction.

The updated concept plan and School Board presentation materials are available in the Documents section near the bottom right of this page.
