Visual Arts Committee Review of Draft Public Art Strategy

Hello,

Thank you for being part of the journey to shape the future of culture and creativity in Mountain View! After months of community engagement, research, and data collection, the City is thrilled to announce that the first complete narrative draft of the Public Art Strategy is now available for public viewing.

On Wednesday, July 8, the Visual Arts Committee will convene to review and provide feedback on the narrative draft, and consider a formal recommendation to the City Council.

Visual Arts Committee Meeting Information:

  • Date: Wednesday, July 8, 2026
  • Time: 6:00 PM
  • Location: Atrium Conference Room, 500 Castro St., Mountain View, CA 94041
  • Agenda and Attachments

This strategy builds on the foundational collection of 122 publicly accessible artworks to create a roadmap for the next decade of cultural investment. It focuses on two primary goals: expanding public art opportunities (like interactive installations and creative placemaking) and modernizing the City's policies to support long-term stewardship of the collection.

Community Engagement by the Numbers

The community engagement process launched in September 2025 utilized a variety of tools to support an inclusive and accessible experience. Participation from a broad cross-section of Mountain View yielded the following outcomes:

  • 10 community events hosted.
  • Over 700 total participants engaged.
  • 306 online and paper surveys collected.
  • 2,806 sticker votes recorded on interactive vision boards.
  • 266 pins placed on the community location map

Key Findings from the Community

Community values, practical considerations, and VAC guidance all helped to inform the final Public Art Strategy. Key findings include:

  • Top Locations: Downtown Mountain View, public parks, trails, and transit areas emerged as the overwhelming geographic priorities.
  • Preferred Art Typologies: While traditional media such as murals (56%) and sculptures (48%) remain highly favored, there is demand for experiential and functional installations, including light art, gateway structures, and artist-designed functional elements (such as benches or bike racks).
  • The Role of Art: Approximately 66% of survey respondents state that public art should reflect Mountain View’s identity as a culturally diverse community, while 63% believe it should bring a sense of whimsy and delight to everyday spaces.
  • Supporting the Creative Economy: Analysis identified a clear community desire to support local and regional artists.

Next Steps and Timeline

The Public Art Strategy will progress through the following milestones ahead of formal adoption:

  1. July 8, 2026: VAC meeting to review the narrative draft, discuss community feedback, and consider a formal recommendation.
  2. August – September 2026: Staff and consultants will integrate committee feedback while concurrently finalizing the graphic design, formatting, and visual layout assembly.
  3. October 1, 2026: The finalized, fully designed Public Art Strategy document will be published for public view.
  4. October 27, 2026: The final strategy will be presented to the City Council for formal approval and adoption.

Thank you for helping shape the public art program in Mountain View!
