Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan

Imagining the Future of Mountain View Parks and RecreationMountain View&rsquo;s parks and recreation programs are an essential part of what makes this City a great place to live, work and play. While this has always been true, access to open space has become even more important as the community sought wellness and connection during and coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a lot to love about Mountain View&rsquo;s parks and recreation programs, with well-used established parks and new parks being constructed such as Fayette Park, which opens in mid-October. In addition, seven new park sites are currently identified, and staff has the capacity to complete the construction of one to two new parks a year. Even with these plans for park expansion, there is a tremendous opportunity to reimagine our parks and programs to provide enhanced amenities and recreational offerings to meet the evolving needs of the community and to create better access to open space in underserved areas such as Monta Loma, Rex Manor, Whisman and other neighborhoods north of Central Expressway, as well as the Central and San Antonio areas.To seize this opportunity, the City is developing a Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan. This Plan, one of the City Council&rsquo;s top priority projects, will guide the future of the City&rsquo;s park and open space resources, community facilities and recreation programming. Your creative ideas and input are key to shaping an innovative plan that is responsive to community needs and will accomplish a bold new vision for our parks, facilities and programs.

The City of Mountain View is  developing a city-wide Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan built on science-based guidance and community needs, values, and priorities.

The City of Mountain View has a project to enhance safety, eliminate fatal or severe injury crashes, and increase the number of sustainable trips on California Street between Showers Drive and Shoreline Boulevard. As part of the 2024 repaving project, the City plans to install new crosswalks and sidewalk corners, and redo the lane striping on California Street. This neighborhood will first experience a Pilot Project, which will be evaluated before it becomes permanent. The California Street Pilot Project will implement:a four-lane-to-three-lane road diet (one vehicle travel lane in each direction)a two-way left-turn center laneprotected intersections (where bikes are separated from vehicles)temporary bulb-outs (extra protected space at the corners)high-visibility midblock crossings with enhanced lightingparking-protected bikeways with a buffered section separating the parked cars from the bikeway.The bikeway buffer area will contain different elements in each section as we test out vertical delineators (flex posts), armadillos (small oval-shaped bumps), and planter boxes to see what works best, what is most cost-effective, and what the community prefers.For more information, visit the California Street Pilot Project webpage.La Ciudad de Mountain View dispone de un proyecto para mejorar la seguridad, eliminar los accidentes mortales o con heridos graves, e incrementar el número de desplazamientos sostenibles en California Street entre Showers Drive y Shoreline Boulevard. <div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW154428184 BCX0">The City of Mountain View is committed to providing safe and accessible off-leash dog areas for park visitors and furry friends to enjoy. In 2014, the City began offering an off-leash dog program in City parks with the goal of providing specific locations and times for dogs to socialize while minimally impacting other park users. The City now has off-leash sites at six parks including Bubb, Cuesta, Cuesta Annex, Eagle, McKelvey, Whisman and Cooper. The Cooper Park off-leash dog area is the only site that is located on school district property.Cooper Park is comprised of both school district property (to the north) and City property (to the south). The Mountain View Whisman School District has requested that the City of Mountain View move the Cooper Park Off-Leash Dog Area from school district property to city property, so the City has been exploring various options to satisfy the relocation request.As part of this relocation effort, the City has been engaging with residents to receive input on proposed locations and ideas that may be feasible. Many factors must be taken into consideration when determining relocation areas including park amenities, uses, ingress/egress, infrastructure, maintenance, function, surroundings, available resources and the safety of all park users. The City developed a survey with four viable options for residents to choose from. The survey will be active May 1-31, 2024.
