Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan

The outreach activities for the Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan have successfully been completed! The efforts included engaging pop-ups, interactive workshops, and a comprehensive survey designed to gather valuable public input. The feedback and insights collected will play a vital role in shaping the Plan's vision, goals, and objectives to ensure they reflect the needs and aspirations of the community. BIG THANKS to everyone who participated and contributed to this important initiative!

The next steps for the project will be for the consultant (SFEI) to synthesize all the community input with the scientific data and analysis and meet with the City Project Team to identify opportunities and feasibility for implementation and monitoring the recommendations in the Plan.

The City of Mountain, in partnership with SFEI, recently completed a stakeholder workshop as part of the community outreach process for the Plan. Subject matter specialists, thought partners, and residents shared their knowledge, experience and views on topics including designing and planting around the built environment, incorporating habitat for biodiversity into transportation and transit, and protecting spaces for nature.

Participants engaged in robust and meaningful discussions and collaborated to make recommendations that will help guide the development of the Plan. Click on the workshop slide deck to see the information shared at the stakeholder workshop and the recommendations made.

Are you a stakeholder, volunteer, or community member with technical knowledge, interest, and/or relationship to biodiversity and the urban forest? If so, we invite you to participate in a two-hour Stakeholder Workshop on November 7^th to support the development of a Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan for the City of Mountain View.

This is an opportunity for subject matter specialists and thought partners to roll up their sleeves and engage in deep discussions regarding the Plan.

The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) will host another community workshop for the Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan on Thursday, October 17 where they will share preliminary findings and insights from the research and engage with residents and stakeholders to hear their thoughts and ideas about the vision, goals, and outcomes for the Plan. There will be a virtual and in-person option for convenience, and Mandarin and Spanish interpretation services will be offered at the in-person workshop. We hope you will join us!

Join us at an upcoming event! We will be hosting two community engagement opportunities on Wednesday, October 2^nd. Please join the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) in the afternoon as they “pop-up” at the Senior Center with fun and educational activities to help envision a vibrant ecosystem for the City of Mountain View. In the evening, SFEI will host Mandarin and Spanish translated workshops at the Community Center where our Mandarin and Spanish speaking residents can provide their feedback about the vision, goals and outcomes for the Plan.

Thanks to all of those who joined us for the Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan community engagement opportunity at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on September 11^th. SFEI gave a great presentation about the project, including preliminary details and insights on what the research and findings indicate and how that information will guide the content and recommendations in the Plan. There was also a summary of initial public input received from the pop-up, workshop and youth event and how that will feedback be incorporated into the Plan. PRC and community members asked thoughtful questions and shared valuable ideas and viewpoints. Thanks to all who joined us on August 10 for the youth and families workshop at Pioneer Park! Through fun and entertaining music and activities, kids and adults shared their ideas and input about biodiversity and the urban forest.

Next up, SFEI will provide a project update at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 7 p.m. Please join us in person or virtually to hear about the research findings and initial public feedback received. Please join us on Saturday, August 10 for a unique musical pop-up event at Pioneer Memorial Park. This opportunity is geared towards youth and families and will feature live music by local artist Andy Z! We will engage with participants through fun activities, songs and conversation. We want to hear ideas for a biodiverse Mountain View - even from our youngest residents!
